Ohio Northern University Social Media Workshop

Last week March 24, 2023, Ohio Northern University hosted a social media workshop. I attended and I've got to admit it was pretty interesting listening to the guest speakers. Not just because the topics themselves were interesting, but it was because it was the first time I have been to something like this. It was really cool to go to listen to someone talk about something relating to my major in that way. I mean yeah I take classes that revolve around social media, but this was a different context than a lecture. I felt like a part of the industry in a small way, even if all I did was listen and live tweet. Out of all the speakers and topics that were discussed that day, the podcasting one and the social media audit ones were the most memorable to me besides the Disney guy, I don't remember his name but I am pretty sure his first name is Steven.

The podcast discussion was memorable not only because I am a podcast creator myself, but also because the person giving the talk was none other than Gregory Phipps himself who is also my professor for the podcasting course I am in. It was kind of weird seeing him outside his classroom. He went over some things he had talked about in class already, so it was sort of like a quick refresher for me about class content. The speaker directly after him, whose name I do not remember. I did not go into this talk knowing what a social media audit was, but I left informed, well informed infect. I learned what a social media audit is and what it's results could mean and be used for. I learned why you would want to conduct one and how. Really interesting stuff, I won't just rehash what she said, but I am a fan with the way she presented it. The slides were clean and the way it was explained wasn't too wordy or filled with jargon or anything. It was simple and easy to understand.

Those two were the most memorable, and were my candidates to live tweet to. After that I didn't really document anything else from the other speakers. That's not to say what they talked about wasn't interesting enough to document, its just that I had used the first two before hand. Anyways I definitely enjoyed the experience and I hope to go to it again the next time it happens. Hopefully its hosted at ONU again, if not then I might make the drive to wherever the host it if it isn't too far away.

Linking With LinkedIn

LinkedIn's is a social media platform all about building connections with it's users and their potential future employers. It is one of the most trusted platforms ever created, as it's potential job opportunities as well as the seriousness that goes into appearing and being professional all create an atmosphere of integrity and genuineness. LinkedIn's algorithm also allows it to match users with relevant info and other users, which isn't really exclusive to LinkedIn but it opens up potential connection opportunities they otherwise may miss. This content filtering can help you connect people or businesses that you may already know or have contacted before, filter out non-substantial content like political messages or content that is made just to farm engagements or likes, LinkedIn is made to let it's users to interact with more niche content that suit's their interests.

Now that's all fine and interesting, but how does one really succeed on the platform. Well for one being on the platform is the first choice in a string of choices to getting a job you actually want. I mean you don't really need a LinkedIn account to talk to a Subway manager, which isn't downplaying people who work in fast food, but LinkedIn can help people get more specialized or specific jobs in their career path. Being on LinkedIn shows that you at least care enough to want to potentially build business connections. Being active on the app and being up to date with the industry would be pretty helpful, as being informed lets you act and respond to whatever is going on in the industry at that point in time. Staying curious, actively wanting to learn about the industry or a specific business is also a really good idea. At the end of the day, wanting to learn and acting/being professional will surely bring you at least some success in finding a job in whatever branch of the business industry interests you.

Pintrest Intrest: How Pin Chains Helps You Find What You're Looking For

Pinterest is relatively simple, and similar in concept to other social medias. Pinterest allows you to look at and save Pins made by other people or brands, which in turn you could save to have your homepage be curated to look more like whatever you have saved. While you could say other social medias do something similar, with liking and following content and their creators to see more of it, Pinterest's way of doing it allows users to create "chains" or "links" of their saved content to receive more and more Pins like the ones they save. Whether its more Pins from the same creator, or if it's Pins that the algorithm has deemed relevant or similar to your saves, Pinterest allows for a consistent and easy-to-access hub for all of your favorite interests and Pins.

Because of this system, Pinterest is also very effective in advertising products you already trust and consume. Maybe you have a particular brand or item you enjoy, saving pins of that brand or product will eventually build a catalogue that fits those interests Pinterest sees you have. Maybe there is another brand that sells the same product you like, maybe it's better than the one you already use, Pinterest could introduce you to the brand and check it out for yourself to really see the difference. These "Chains of Pins" allow you to discover products from the creators you love, or new brands entirely easier than ever.

Snapchat: Short, Sweet, and Simple content

Snapchat is a one of the bigger social media platforms whose main demographic is that of the younger portion of the population. Because of that fact, as well as its general layout and format, short-form content reigns supreme on this platform. It's concept of stories influenced many if not all social media platforms with how easy and effective it is to use on a casual user's level as well as a marketing level. Users have an easy way to express themselves and the current moment they are living in, and businesses and brands have an easily-digestible form of advertising that isn't to intrusive on average users.

Aside from the short-form content being so effective, because of the nature of the platform, many positive and feel good stories and be shared without having to read a whole articles or story. It feels more personal tosee people succeed in life despite their hardships, and Snapchat's format allows these stories to be more accessible to users who might not have ever even known or heard about it otherwise. Snapchat's constant stream of short-form media keeps itself and it's users relevant and in the know.

Knowledge is Power! Knowing Twitter's ins and outs is key to marketing success!

Twitter is not different from other social media platforms. If you were to boil down the function of twitter and other social media platforms they essentially do the same thing: keep us connected with the world we live in. But as you look at every social media's nuances and differences in systems you see why people choose one or the other. Maybe its one's layout, maybe its the accessibility, or even the platform's freedoms, everyone has a preference to one system or another. With Twitter it isn't as widely used like Facebook is, which I think is due to the fact that Twitter's algorithms and other systems are more complex. Facebook is very general and universal app, it has a lot of functions that appeal to a lot of people. Twitter on the other hand is very simple in comparison, with its form of marketing stragtegy relies heavily on the user's content and online persona. Having a appealing online personality is only one part of the key to success with twitter marketing, a user's ability to stay relevant and successfully remain active and consistent is also very important. Knowing what to say, how it relates to the brand being built, and how to say things to perpetuate a certain personality or charm for your brand is vital to success. A very easy example would be Wendy's. They are notorious for their snarky remarks on twitter and it is now what they are known for. They haven't gone back on those actions and tries to change, its part of the brand now. Respecting that and continuing to be consistent has brought them success. Being sarcastic isn't all that it takes however, their posts were designed to be easy to digest, and easy to engage with. They are a food chain after-all, so their content has that inherent ability to be more easily interacted with, with polls about certain menu items or liking a certain food from Wendy's. One the started engaging with their audience on a more personal level, it opened up a whole knew facet of engagement they wouldn't have otherwise.

At the end of the day you don't have to be a Wendy's clone to succeed in marketing on Twitter. There are many other brands and companies with successful marketing teams and accounts. Just being able to find the right mix of personality and content creation will take a brand or company pretty far.
