Twitter is not different from other social media platforms. If you were to boil down the function of twitter and other social media platforms they essentially do the same thing: keep us connected with the world we live in. But as you look at every social media's nuances and differences in systems you see why people choose one or the other. Maybe its one's layout, maybe its the accessibility, or even the platform's freedoms, everyone has a preference to one system or another. With Twitter it isn't as widely used like Facebook is, which I think is due to the fact that Twitter's algorithms and other systems are more complex. Facebook is very general and universal app, it has a lot of functions that appeal to a lot of people. Twitter on the other hand is very simple in comparison, with its form of marketing stragtegy relies heavily on the user's content and online persona. Having a appealing online personality is only one part of the key to success with twitter marketing, a user's ability to stay relevant and successfully remain active and consistent is also very important. Knowing what to say, how it relates to the brand being built, and how to say things to perpetuate a certain personality or charm for your brand is vital to success. A very easy example would be Wendy's. They are notorious for their snarky remarks on twitter and it is now what they are known for. They haven't gone back on those actions and tries to change, its part of the brand now. Respecting that and continuing to be consistent has brought them success. Being sarcastic isn't all that it takes however, their posts were designed to be easy to digest, and easy to engage with. They are a food chain after-all, so their content has that inherent ability to be more easily interacted with, with polls about certain menu items or liking a certain food from Wendy's. One the started engaging with their audience on a more personal level, it opened up a whole knew facet of engagement they wouldn't have otherwise.
At the end of the day you don't have to be a Wendy's clone to succeed in marketing on Twitter. There are many other brands and companies with successful marketing teams and accounts. Just being able to find the right mix of personality and content creation will take a brand or company pretty far.
This was a great insight. I love twitter, and while I do try to use it to push my brand it's very hard to get traction. The issue is I see it as a way to share information even if I'm not the one tweeting it, but I'd love for that to be my main social media platform because of the freeness you mentioned.
